When is the best time to search for a new job?

You ever had a personal trainer? If so, you’ve probably heard them say: “The best time to work out is when you don’t feel like it.” Why? Because that’s when you push past your comfort zone and actually grow.
Same thing applies to your career. The best time to explore a new job opportunity is when you’re happy in your current role, not when you’re sweating bullets trying to find something before rent is due. When you’re not desperate, you have the freedom to be selective. You can ask the real questions. You can make sure the job actually aligns with your career goals.
Yet, surprisingly when I reach out to candidates about a job opportunity, sometimes I hear: “Nah, I’m not looking right now.” End of conversation.
I get it. You’re happy, and content where you are. Interviewing takes some time and effort. But here’s what you’re missing out on:
✅ Expanding your network
✅ Keeping your interview skills sharp
✅ Learning about new industries, companies, products & services
✅ Building relationships with recruiters, hiring managers, & decision-makers
✅ Helping a friend by referring them for the role
The best opportunities often show up when you least expect them. Sure, preparing for an interview can be hard. But would you rather take some time to explore new roles now when you're not under pressure, or later when you're in panic mode? Choose your hard.
