Real talk: When a recruiter or hiring manager asks, "Are you interviewing anywhere else?", they’re not just making conversation, they’re gathering intel. Here’s what they’re really trying to figure out:

🔹 How serious are you about this role?  Are you genuinely interested, or just testing the waters?

🔹 How quickly do they need to move?  If you’re in final rounds, or have pending offers, they might speed up their process to avoid losing you.

🔹 How competitive is the job market right now?  If strong candidates like you are in high demand, they’ll take note.

🔹Are interviewing with any of their competitors?  This gives them insight into whether you’re considering opportunities with other companies in the same industry or niche.

It’s not a trick question, but it is a calculated one. Your answer gives them clues about where they stand in your job search and how quickly they should act.

So, how do you answer in a way that’s both honest and strategic? Share where you are in your job search in a way that neither undersells your candidacy nor overhypes it. Just like in dating, the goal is to show interest without looking too available.

🔹 Be transparent, but intentional.  If you’re interviewing elsewhere, let them know. If this role is your priority, make that clear.

🔹 Keep it broad.  No need to name-drop companies. Talk about industries you are interested in or types of roles instead.

🔹 Turn it into an opportunity.  This is your moment to reinforce why this job, this company, and this team excite you.

💡 Example Responses

🔹 “I’m having conversations for a few leadership roles in the AI space, but this opportunity stands out because of the innovation happening here.”

🔹“ I’m still early in my job search and exploring a few opportunities with B2B SaaS companies.”

🔹 “Yes, I’m exploring some options, but I was especially drawn to this role because it aligns so well with my vision for the next step in my career.”

🔹 “I am actively interviewing, but being selective. What excites me most about this role is the chance to work with a growing team where I can build scalable marketing programs from the ground up. Your company’s approach to brand storytelling really stands out to me.”

The takeaway: This question is a chance to reinforce your value, show alignment, and keep the interview momentum in your favor. Keep it brief, and be strategic. Every question in an interview is a chance to shape your narrative. Own your narrative and let’s get to work!
