Woman interviewing for a job

It’s one of the most common interview questions, yet it can make or break the rest of the conversation.

"Tell me about yourself."

As an executive recruiter and career coach, I’ve seen so many candidates fumble through it. Here's the thing - It’s not just a warm-up question. It’s your chance to make a memorable first impression.

So, why does this question carry so much weight?

Because the interviewer isn’t just looking for a summary of your experience. They’re assessing your confidence, how well you can communicate, and how effectively you can position yourself as a star recruit. In just a few sentences, they’re evaluating:

🔹 Your ability to communicate and present a clear, compelling narrative

🔹 How you connect the dots in your own career journey

🔹 Whether your background and energy align with their team needs

🔹 If you’ve done your research and are prepared to engage in a meaningful discussion

How do you nail it?

Use the Present, Past, Future framework. Here’s how it works:

🔹 Present: What are you doing now, and what are your key strengths?

🔹 Past: Highlight relevant experiences that led you to this moment.

🔹 Future: Why are you excited about this role, and how will you add value?

Let’s look at a real example for a VP of Brand Marketing position:

❌ Bad example:

"I’ve been in marketing for a few years, working on different things in various industries. I like managing teams. My last job wasn’t fulfilling, so I’m looking for something new. I’m not sure what I want next, but this role seemed interesting."

Yawn. That response is vague, unenthusiastic, and leaves the interviewer wondering if you’re the right fit.

✅ Excellent example:

"I’m currently leading brand strategy at a fast-growing health tech company, managing a team of 10 and recently spearheaded a cross-channel campaign that boosted brand awareness by 30%. Before that, I spent 10 years at global consumer goods companies, driving award-winning brand campaigns and implementing data-driven strategies that increased market share by 20%. I’m excited about this VP of Brand Marketing role because I’m passionate about building consumer-facing brands, and your company’s focus on innovation and sustainability is exactly what I’m looking for."

See the difference? This response is confident, focused, and directly shows why you're the perfect match for the role. It helps you own your story and leave a strong impression.

Remember that practice makes perfect. Put in the reps. Record yourself answering this question and pay attention to your pace (too fast, too slow), or how many times you use filler words like "um" or "you know."

So, how will you answer this question next time? Are you ready to impress your interviewer and ensure you advance to the next round?

Let’s get to work!
