Get off the job board hamster wheel.

The job board is a tool. But it is not a strategy. In my years of observing career transitions and economic shifts, one truth remains:

👉 The most meaningful opportunities come through people, not platforms.

Yes, job boards can be helpful. But relying solely on them? It’s like fishing with one line when you could be casting a net.

Here’s how to start showing up differently and building a strategy that actually moves the needle:

🔹 Make a list of companies you admire.

Follow them. Follow their leadership team and their recruiters. Read their content. Pay attention to their wins, their struggles, their hiring trends. The more you know, the more value you can offer in a conversation.

🔹 Reconnect with folks.

You’re not “bothering” anyone. You’re staying human. Reach out with a simple, “Hey, thought of you! How are things going?” Relationships move opportunities.

🔹 Grow your network. Set a weekly outreach goal.

1 coffee chat. 2 DMs. 3 new follows. You’re not trying to go viral. You’re trying to build momentum. And momentum loves consistency.

🔹 Ask for informational interviews.

Don’t ask for a job. Ask for insight. Ask about their career path. Ask what they love about their work. People love to share when they feel seen and heard.

🔹 Polish your LinkedIn presence.

Is your LinkedIn profile working for you or against you? Does your headline tell people what you do or just list your last job title? Have you written content for your 'About' section? Got key words? These details matter.

🔹 Use a job search tracker (or create your own).

There are numerous free tools available. Track roles, contacts, follow-ups, and status. Treat your job search like a campaign with goals, metrics, and accountability.

🔹 Practice your pitch.

If someone asked, “So, tell me about yourself,” could you answer it clearly, confidently, and in 30 seconds or less? You need a pitch that highlights who you are, what you do, and what you’re looking for, without rambling.

🔹 Manage your mindset.

Rejection isn’t failure. It’s feedback. You're not “behind.” You’re building something! Set boundaries. Block time for job search tasks. Stop doom-scrolling LinkedIn at midnight.

Yes, you could apply to 87 jobs in your pajamas before breakfast. But if that worked, you'd already have a job offer.

Strategy beats scattershot every time.
